crackle and pop: soft cell – torch (12″)

I first came upon Soft Cell like a lot of people, via their TOTP performance of “Tainted Love”,

and “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” is one of the best songs to come out of the 80s to my mind.

However, my personal favourite at the time and now is 1982’s “Torch” with John Gatchell’s amazing trumpet making this song Soft Cell’s finest moment for me.

According to Wikipedia Marc Almond’s duet towards the end of the song with Cindy Ecstasy is sung slightly off-key in an approximation of an Estuary English accent.

  1. Happy memories. I *love* Almond’s voice, and I don’t know that he every bettered the early Soft Cell recordings.
